HISTORY
Recent discoveries at two caves known as Gua Musang nd Gua Cha in Kelantan show that there were human settlements dating back to prehistoric times. Historical records show that Kelantan was influenced by the Funan Kingdom on the Mekong River. Chinese records indicate contact with Kelantan which was referred to as Ho-Lo-Tan and which appeared to be an influential kingdom in the region.
Kelantan was also a vassal of the Srivijaya empire and later the Siamese. In the 15th century, the Malacca sultanate held sway over Kelantan and eventually the Johor sultanate and the Terengganu sultanate took over. In the 18th century the provinces came under a powerful warlord known a Long Yunus, whose descendents make up the present royal family.
In 1900 Kelantan became a tributary state of the Siamese. With the signing of the Anglo-Siamese Treaty in 1909, control was passed over to the British.

GETTING TO KELANTAN
BY ROAD
There is an excellent network of roads linking major towns in Peninsular Malaysia to Kelantan. From Kuala Lumpur, the overland route takes one eastward along the Karak Highway to Kuantan in Pahang, a journey of about 3 hours.
The rest of the journey from Kuantan to Kota Bharu takes about 5 hours. The route heads northward along the coast passing through picturesque villages providing scenic vistas of palm-fringed beaches overlooking the azure waters of the South China Sea.
The inland route to Kota Bharu turns off the Karak Highway at Bentong and proceeds northwards to Raub and then to Gua Musang, and Machang before reaching Kota Bharu. An alternative route exits the Karak Highway at Temerloh and passes through Jerantut, Benta and Gua Musang en-route to Kota Bharu.
From Penang, one has to get to Grik via Sungai Petani in Kedah and then travel along the scenic East-West Highway to Jeli in Kelantan before continuing the journey to Kota Bharu.
There are regular air-conditioned express bus services operating from Kuala Lumpur and major towns to Kota Bharu.
BY RAIL
Train services from Kuala Lumpur to Kelantan terminate at Wakaf Bharu and Tumpat. From these two points, one can get to Kota Bharu either by taxi or bus. Stop over points en-route include Gua Musang, Kuala Krai, Tanah Merah and Pasir Mas.
Once you are in Kota Bharu, it is relatively easy to get to nearby districts as regular bus and taxi services are available from the main bus terminal.
For those who are interested in visiting places of interest in the interior of Kelantan, it is advisable to enquire with Tourism Malaysia Kelantan Office, the Kelantan State Tourist Information Centre or any registered travel agent in Malaysia.
BY AIR
Malaysia Airlines operates daily direct flights (five times a day) from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) to the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Pengkalan Chepa. It is situated about 20 minutes outside the city. The budget carrier AirAsia operates from the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) in KLIA to Kota Bharu four times a day.

Songket

Songket is a fabric that belongs to the brocade family of textiles. It is hand-woven in silk or cotton, and intricately patterned with gold or silver threads. The metallic threads stand out against the background cloth to create a shimmering effect. In the weaving process the metallic threads are inserted in between the silk or cotton weft (latitudinal) threads. The term songket comes from the Malay/Indonesian word sungkit, which means "to hook". It has something to do with the method of songket making; to hook and pick a group of threads, and then slip the gold threads in it. The word menyongket means ‘to embroider with gold or silver threads’. Songket is a luxury product traditionally worn during ceremonial occasions as sarong, shoulder cloths or head ties.

Keropok Lekor

Basically, there are two types of keropok. The first one is a tube-shaped that resembles sausages called "Keropok Lekor" and the second one is the cracker-shaped called "Keropok Keping" (sliced keropok). Keropok Lekor is what Terengganu is famous for.

They are made up of fish, flour and other ingredients. For Keropok Lekor, you can eat it in two ways. Deep fried or boiled. If you don't really like the fishy smell, then better to take the deep fried as sometime the boiled one will have some fishy smell, especially when they are no longer hot. However, some like it boiled as it doesn't require oil to cook.

The Keropok Keping is also made up of larger tube-shaped keropok being sliced into very thin slices. Then they are dried under the sun to make it storagable. Then you need to fried it before consumption. It is nice to be eaten alone or dipping with the local chili sauce.

Ingredients:
1 kg fish (ikan parang or ikan kembong)
500g sago flour
Salt to taste
125ml water
Some ice-cubes
1 or 2 pandan leaves

Method:
Clean the fish thoroughly, remove its intestines and chop off its head and tail, leaving the body intact.
Make slits along both sides of the fish, then scrape off the meat; discard the bones. Pound, chop or mince the meat finely, adding salt to taste.
Add some ice cubes and continue mincing the fish meat. Add sago flour and water. Stir the mixture until it becomes a soft dough.
Dip your hand in the sago flour and roll the dough into a cylindrical shape.
Boil a potful of water. Add in one or two knotted pandan leaves. Drop the keropok lekor into the boiling water.
Wait for it to float and remove with a slotted spoon. Set aside to cool.
Cut the pieces diagonally into thin slices. Dry in the sun thoroughly, then deep-fry in hot oil.

Nasi Dagang

Nasi Dagang is a rice speciality of Terengganu. The Dish is made by cooking rice and glutinous rice together, to which is then added coconut cream once it is cooked. It is eaten with it's own specially made side dishes of tuna curry and a light vegetable pickle. Simplicity is its essence.

Ingredients:
300g nasi dagang rice or substitute with 200g
good grade Siamese rice mixed with 100g glutinous rice
1 grated coconut to extract 3/4 cup thick coconut milk
3/4 cup thin coconut milk
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds ( halba )
2 cloves garlic, sliced finely
3 shallots, sliced finely
2cm young ginger, sliced finely
1/2 tsp salt

Method:
Wash rice well and soak for five to six hours. Drain well, then steam rice for 20 to 25 minutes or until half-cooked.
Stir in thin coconut milk and continue steaming for 15 minutes until rice is nearly cooked.
Combine thick coconut milk, shallots, garlic, ginger, fenugreek and salt. Stir into the cooked rice then steam once more for 10 to 15 minutes or until rice is properly cooked.
Serve rice with kari ikan tongkol.

Note:
Nasi dagang is a special type of reddish brown glutinous rice. If it is not available, substitute with Siamese rice and glutinous rice mixture as per recipe.

Kapas

Kapas Island is situated offshore about 30 minutes by slow boat or 10 minutes by fast boat from Marang jetty, 20 minutes south of Kuala Terengganu. It is a lovely small island with beautiful, quiet, unspoiled sandy beaches; cool and clear blue waters, swaying coconut trees and caves with swallows’ nests. Its waters are home to beautiful marine life such as fish, turtles, corals and others. It is a great place for swimming, snorkelling, diving, wind surfing, kayaking, boating or just pure relaxation. Accommodation varies from deluxe and budget chalets offering air conditioned or fan.

The waters around the island abound with sea-shells, fish and turtles. Snorkelling and underwater diving are popular along stretched of shallow coral reefs of the island's western shore. A World War II shipwreck located 5 nautical miles offshore is the key attraction to divers. During the months of May to August, you can go squid fishing.

Kapas Island is just 10 minutes away by speed boat from Marang jetty, which is 18km south of Kuala Terengganu or about 20 minutes by road.

To get to the islands, you can also board a bus or taxi at Kuala Terengganu for the fishing village of Marang. It costs about RM1.00 by bus and RM10.00 by non-airconditioned taxi. Air-conditioned taxis charge RM15.00.

Gemia

Another new born island in Terengganu, Gemia Island (perhaps is more accurate to say, new born tourism spot) is a tiny island located just beside Kapas Island.
There is only one resort on the island to accommodate the raising number of tourists. Rooms are stretching along the rocky shore. Though the beach is narrow, yet, like other islands in east coast Peninsular Malaysia, it is covered by white sand.

Because it is new and small and moreover, like other island hidden in the shadow of Redang and Perhentian Island, Gemia Island is less known to the tourists. Nevertheless, this has prepared the island a peaceful and quite atmosphere for holiday seekers and also the wildlife. Sea eagles, reef herons, tern and also the precious giant leatherback turtle come to nest their eggs on this island every year. Like some of the regular tourists who spend their holiday on the island every year, green turtles, Hawksbill and Olive Ridley turtle are also regular visitors too.

Pulau Gemia, a 15-minute boat ride from the Marang jetty in Terengganu, is a tiny island located just beside Pulau Kapas.

By Bus
There are no bus services directly to the Marang jetty. The nearest destination is Kuala Terengganu. From there, you can either charter a taxi or a van to take you to the Marang jetty.

By Air
There are two airlines that service the Kuala Trengganu airport, namely AirAsia and MAS. From the airport, you need to take a taxi or charter a van to take you to the Marang jetty.

By car
The drive from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu takes about 8 hours. Take the Karak Highway to get to Kuantan. From there, follow the sign board to Kuala Terengganu. One can choose to travel during day time and reaches Kuala Terengganu to spend the night or one can travel at night and reach there just in time for breakfast. After a rest stop at Kuala Terengganu, proceed to the Marang jetty which is about half an hour drive away from Kuala Terengganu town. Upon reaching Marang, there are plenty of parking areas just opposite the jetty. Charges are per-day basis.

Tenggol

Tenggol Island is another beautiful diving getaway island just 45 minutes from the coastal jetty in Kuala Dungun. It size is approximately 3km in length and 2km in width. However, this has not prevented it from becoming a paradise for many people especially diving enthusiasts.

The sandy beach blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment. Further inland are forested rocky hills that make it a scenic destination for adventure seekers. The hills rising over 800ft offer a panoramic view of the island. This rocky terrain extends from the interior of the island to the ocean and has created a dramatic ideal hideaway for marine life.

For example in Teluk Air Tawar there is a large spread of sloping reef on the rocky wall, whereas Rajawali Reef, with vertical rocky walls which fall as deep as 32m, is home to corals and other marine life like batfish and black tip reef sharks. Besides calm coral gardens, you could also chance upon humphead parrotfish, giant stingray, bat fishes, whale sharks, leopard sharks, schooling jacks and others in the diving spots around Tenggol. Whale sharks are seen in certain areas from August to October every year.

Getting There
Ferry services have to be arranged from Kuala Dungun as Pulau Tenggol is not serviced by public or regular transport. Tenggol Aqua Resort provides ferry services between the island and Kuala Dungun.

The nearest airport are the Kerteh (30mins. From Kuala Dungun), Kuala Terengganu (1hr) and Kuantan (2hr 30mins). Visitors can fly in and hire a taxi to Kuala Dungun.

Air-conditioned coaches from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Terengganu also stop at Kuala Dungun. Or you can drive to Kuala Dungun, park at the office of Tenggol Aqua Resort, and take the resort ferry to Pulau Tenggol. From Kuala Lumpur, it is a leisurely and scenic 7hr 30mins drive to Kuala Dungun.
